Frequently asked questions

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination?

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from or transiting through an endemic country (most of Sub-Saharan Africa, parts of South America). Direct flights from Europe, North America, or Asia do not require it, but many travellers get vaccinated as a precaution. The certificate is valid for life.

Can I extend my tourist visa in Mozambique?

Yes. A 30-day tourist visa can be extended once for an additional 30 days at any SENAMI (Serviço Nacional de Migração) office. Apply before your current visa expires. You will need your passport, a letter explaining why you need an extension, proof of funds, and the extension fee (approximately $25). A second extension may be possible but is not guaranteed.

Can I work on a tourist visa in Mozambique?

No. Working on a tourist visa is illegal. You need a work visa (DIRE with labour authorisation from MITESS) to be employed in Mozambique. Penalties include fines and deportation. There is no dedicated digital nomad visa as of 2026, though remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area.

Is Mozambique safe for expats?

Maputo and southern Mozambique are generally safe for expats with normal urban precautions. The northern province of Cabo Delgado has experienced an insurgency since 2017 — travel to this region should be carefully considered and is advised against by most embassies. Inhambane, the Bazaruto Archipelago, and the southern coast are considered safe and popular with tourists and expats.
