Key facts

Frequently asked questions

Does SVG tax worldwide income?

Yes for residents — they are generally taxed on worldwide income. Non-residents are taxed only on income sourced in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Is there any capital gains or inheritance tax?

No. SVG does not currently levy a general capital gains tax or an inheritance/estate tax. Property transfers do attract stamp duty, however.

What is the personal tax-free allowance?

Each resident individual receives an annual personal allowance of EC$22,000, which is exempt before the progressive rates apply up to a top rate of 28%.

When does the tax year run?

The tax year follows the calendar year, 1 January to 31 December. Annual income tax returns are filed with the Inland Revenue Department after year-end.

Can I buy SVG citizenship for tax purposes?

No. Unlike several Caribbean neighbours, SVG does not operate a Citizenship-by-Investment programme. Tax residency is established through actual presence and residence, not investment.

What is the main hospital?

Milton Cato Memorial Hospital in Kingstown is the principal public hospital and national referral centre, supported by district hospitals and rural health centres.

Do I need health insurance as a foreigner?

Yes — comprehensive private international insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly advised, since serious cases are often referred overseas and there is no national scheme covering foreigners.

Can I get specialist treatment on the islands?

Routine and many acute needs are handled locally, but complex specialist care, advanced diagnostics and major surgery frequently require referral abroad, commonly to Barbados or Trinidad.

Is the tap water safe?

Treated piped water is available in main populated areas, but many people drink bottled or filtered water, especially on the smaller Grenadine islands where supply can be rain-fed.

Is US currency accepted?

US dollars are accepted in many tourist-facing businesses, but change is usually given in EC dollars. For markets, buses and small shops you'll need EC dollars in cash.

What plugs and voltage are used?

Mains is 230V/50Hz and UK-style Type G three-pin sockets are widely used. Some tourist properties also offer US-style outlets, so bring adapters for your devices.

How reliable is the internet?

Fibre and 4G from Flow and Digicel are solid on Saint Vincent and good in the main Grenadine towns, but can be patchier on remote cays. A mobile-data backup is wise for remote work.

When is hurricane season?

June to November. Travel can be disrupted by weather, so monitor NEMO advisories and keep emergency supplies during those months.

Is Saint Vincent safe?

It is generally relaxed and welcoming. Take normal precautions against petty theft, be sensible in Kingstown after dark, and note the Grenadines are especially safe and quiet.
